“The annual Cork Scrabble tournament was held in the Address Hotel Cork on March 23rd and 24th and proved to be a resounding success. In all we welcomed 38 attendees; some new and some more seasoned players! Three players from overseas, one of whom travelled all the way from Singapore. This year we were in a new playing room and the feedback on this was universally positive.
Congratulations to Kevin Mc Mahon who yet again achieved 1st place. Brian Po and Andy Goodwin were 2nd and 3rd respectively with Catherine Costello winning the high word score with a very impressive 158 points for “ovulation”. That’s some target to aim for in the next tournament.
To inject a little fun into the proceedings there was competition on Sunday for the best themed word. The theme was “Easter” and there were a few words that fitted the brief with a few dodgier ones thrown in for good measure! The winner was “penitents” by a player who had never played in a tournament before. Well done Gerry!
A special word of thanks to the unflappable and efficient Kate who acted as TD. She quietly went about her business to ensure that the tournament ran smoothly. Thanks too to Jennie who ensures that the ratings are submitted to ABSP and WESPA and that all the information is updated on the website.
