Irish Open Scrabble Tournament 2018

The Irish Scrabble Open, run by John Cunningham-Ryan, was held on Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th June 2018, in the ever-popular venue of Hotel Curracloe in Co. Wexford.

There were 14 rated games and 27 players in the main event, and there was also a 4-game novice event on the Sunday afternoon.

A wonderful time was had by all, and the weather was beautiful with people sitting out enjoying the sun & ice-cream cones in between games.

Kevin McMahon won the overall event, with 13 games and a whopping spread of 1,893!

In second place was Feargal Weatherhead, with 10 games and a spread of 1,065.

In third place was Theresa Scallan, also with 10 games, and a spread of 792.

In the group prizes, the winner of the B group was Pauline Russell with 7.5 wins and a spread of 116, and the winner of the C group was Maria Frizelle with 8 wins and a spread of 261. Liam Donnelly won the high word prize, with a score of 133 for SQUARES, and Breda O’Driscoll won the David & Goliath prize when she beat a player 45 rating points higher than herself.
